Are there currently employment opportunities for someone with a zoology degree?
I'm starting college next sept. 2012, and am hoping to get excepted to study zoology at one of Ireland's best university's. I've been working extremely hard so hopefully I get accepted. I was told by my careers counseller today that zoology is a silly degree to do as there are no job opportunities, but to be honest there are very little jobs in any career area in Ireland right now. I personally would love to travel and work in the US, Canada or Australia so I'm asking are there good job opportunities in this area?

- no. there are no jobs avaible for zoology majors anywere. except maybe, working at a zoo.
- If you look at the aza jobs website it shows job opportunities for all aza accreditted zoos and aquariums across the unitied states. Its very helpful in getting a job at a zoo.
- I would hope he was speaking about just about jobs in your area because if was talking about worldwide he is a moron. There are tons and tons of jobs in regards to zoology all over the world. Even more so if you plan on moving to the US, Canada or Australia. You can work in a lab, in the field, for a zoo/aquarium or wildlife center. In the US there are many jobs through federal state or local governments. Research projects, teaching, lab work, field work, there is tons of stuff. If a job involves animals chances are it requires a zoology or related degree. For example I work at a zoo and any of our keeper jobs require zoology or a biological science degree (bio, natural resources, etc). Both my husband and myself have bio science related degrees and both of us have full time jobs. It all depends on what you want to do. If it is what you want to do then go for it and ignore what he said.
- I am a zoology major right now in my third year! And yes there definitely are jobs out there, unfortunately a big part of getting INTO those jobs is knowing people. But they are definitely not limited to just zoos. I would highly recommend that as soon as you get to school you get into as many extracurricular things as possible, especially into a research lab on campus. There are usually many different types of research labs on a science school campus, i currently work in a respirometry lab studying bees. Anyways i guess what i have to say is don't let the job market get you down, If it is what you love you have to go for it, I did and have not regretted it once
