1. Yahoo is very safe!
2. It's a toss up between GMail and Yahoo for free....and for paid > Hushmail.com
3. Any web-based email is safe so long as you don't open every single email that shows up in your box. Remember to never reply to spam email, do not open attachments from people you don't know and be cautious even when opening attachments from people you do know. That said, choose a well-known domain (gmail, yahoo, live, etc) and don't use a password that can be easily guessed.
