  1. Signature confirmation gives you confirmation. Regular certified can be left in the mailbox or on the doorstep. If it's valuable, register and insure it.
  2. Signature confirmation provides proof of delivery. Certified mail provides proof of mailing too.
  3. Certified mail is usually used by someone seeking a signature. If you want a hard copy, then use Certified Mail with a 'return receipt' option. Signature confirmation is a rarely used option. (Contrary to above answer) certified mail cannot be left in a mailbox without being signed for.
